Historic designations in the State of Texas arise under three governmental authorities. All of these designations below help preserve the unique character of the River Valley. Although many of these designations carry no restrictions on land or building use, some do.

I. Texas Historic Commission (THC)
Please call 512-453-6100 for information regarding the following designations.
A) Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHL). For example, in the town of Oakalla there is one such landmark designation.
B) National Registry of Historic Places is administered by the THC in Texas.
C) Archeological Landmarks. The properties that constitute Bowmer Ranch near Youngsport were recognized for archeological preservation in 2003. Please click on Bowmer Ranch to see the Commendation for Archeological Preservation.

III. Texas Department of Agriculture
Family Land Heritage honoring farms or ranches under agricultural use and in one family for 100 years. Call the following numbers for information on this designation 512-463-3285 or 800-835-5832. There are at least two century farms recognized in the River Valley, one outside of Oakalla and the other near Maxdale:
